To mark the closing of the exhibition ״A Sole Cypress״, we will gather beneath the collapsing facade of the Center for Contemporary Art within Nardin Srouji’s installation, for a sound performance and reading. Sound artist Yarin Abu Hamad will open with a droning sound, over which curator Hila Cohen-Schneiderman will read Virginia Woolf’s essay Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid and engage in conversation with Dr. Sarai Aharoni, Senior Lecturer, Head of Gender Studies Program at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Following the reading and conversation, Abu Hamad will continue with a live sound performance.

Virginia Woolf wrote the essay Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid in 1940 during the German Blitz over Britain. While listening to the bombers circling in the night sky, she ponders thinking about peace during wartime. From a concrete moment of threat, she reflects on the connection between war, power, and control, and on the possibility of resistance through thought and imagination.

Yarin Abu Hamad’s sound performance, created especially for the space, is based on original field recordings collected by the artist over the years, including recordings of Druze women singing laments during mourning rituals. Abu Hamad processes and deconstructs these recordings until the sounds are drawn into a sonic vortex that reverberates through the acoustics created by the installation in the exhibition space.

Yarin Abu Hamad (b.1993) is a sound artist from Daliat el-Karmel. Her artistic practice centers on the exploration of sound, soundscapes, and audio documentation. Her work navigates the space between the personal and the collective, using elements of individual memory and experience as a bridge to broader, shared narratives.
